It’s the time of year where spring is here and what better way to kick it off than celebrating with Cinco de Mayo? Here at LBB we love to honor Mexican American heritage with vivid colors, bold lips, and a whole lot of fun!

Historical Significance

Many Americans often confuse Cinco de Mayo to be Mexico’s independence day but it actually commemorates the Mexican’s victory in the Battle of Puebla against the French in 1862.

But what makes this battle so special and why should we care about it?

Defeating the French was so significant because stakes were high for both Mexicans and Union soldiers during the Civil War. At the time, France was one of the few countries considering supporting the Confederacy. This means that should the French have won the Battle of Puebla, it is likely that they would have imperialized Mexico and threatened the Union. So yea… it’s good that Mexico didn’t take an L on that one.

After the Battle of Pueblo, celebrations became an annual tradition for many Californians and Nevadans. In fact, the first officially recorded gathering happened in Virginia City!

Lifestyle Shoot

So how can we celebrate Cinco while still giving it the praise it deserves? In the past our team designed a half day shoot with our beautiful model, Moriah, with the help of Lucky Burro and GMH Photography. Our focus centered on vivid colors, floral accessories, and an updo from our master stylist, Nancy.

When planning the shoot, it was essential to create a setting filled with light and the idea of bringing the joy of spring into our space. You’ll notice in doing this we chose a simple, elegant dress from Swoon to not distract from Moriah’s beauty. This way she embodies a sort of softness and authenticity. One way of incorporating this into your own Cinco look is by choosing bright accessories with a subtle outfit. Then all you need is a pop of color for your lips!

Adding Color

When adding color it’s best to opt for a shade that speaks to the occasion while also flattering your skin tone. For example, we went with a warm poppy red for Moriah to compliment the colors in her bouquet. Instead of matching the exact colors of the flowers, we went with a warm mid-tone to add some depth to her makeup while still staying within the same color story.

Now if you’re looking to go for a bold lip on Cinco, opt for red. The color red represents all of Mexico’s heroes who have fought for the nation’s Independence (and plus it’s a fun way to share your knowledge of Mexican culture.)

Our top pick for this month is our very own melting lip powder in the shade, True Red. She’s a long wearing and vibrant color that is sure to last you 8+ hours throughout your Cinco festivities. You may also prefer Desert Roseif fuchsia red is more in line with your undertones. This one’s a great option for adding a touch of pink to the look.

Supporting Mexican-American Businesses

Of course, Cinco isn’t just about aesthetics but rather remembering the past and taking time to celebrate Mexican American heritage. Whether this means supporting a local Mexican restaurant in your town, buying products from Mexican business owners, or just posting about the history of Cinco on your socials, any contribution is a step in the right direction!

Not sure where to start? We recommend checking out Mari Chuy’s Tequileria y Botanas for fresh dishes from the heart of Michoacan, Mexico. Maria and her husband, Chuy, have been sharing their love for authentic Mexican food in Reno since 2001. They have two locations in Reno (Midtown and the Village at Rancharrah) as well as one in Sparks (Victorian Square). Just make sure to save some room for their deliciously warm cinnamon churros for the best experience!

For all of your floral needs we suggest shopping from one of our favorite vendors, Box of Love, by Johanna Villalobos. We all have a person in our lives who does not receive the amount of recognition they deserve and now is the perfect time to shower them with a thoughtful gift.

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, you can gift mom some hand painted roses and support a local business while you’re at it! Whatever your taste, she has flower arrangements of every variety and occasion.
